Vdanen: fix location for location settings

If you have an iPhone, you'll want to know '''how to make an iPhone battery hold its charge for longer'''

The biggest drain is '''screen brightness''', so don't leave it brighter than you need.

David Pogue, ''New York Times'' tech columnist, passed on the following hints from an Apple store Genius.

;1. "Push" email
Your phone may be checking your email accounts on a frequent schedule. Switch off this "Push" feature; set it to Manually instead (in Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars->Fetch New Data). After this, the phone will only check your email when you run the mail app.

;2. GPS checks
Look at Settings ->General->Restrictions->Location. This shows which apps on your phone are working out your location using GPS and triangulation. If you don't need any of them to do that, turn them off.

;3. Notifications

Next, try Settings -> Notifications to see which apps are allowed to display pop-up notifications. These use power to monitor what else is going on. If you don't need them either, turn them off too.

;4. Background apps
Yes, we all thought background apps are meant to be suspended to save power, but this Genius turned them off anyway. Double-press the Home button to open the multitasking app switcher. Hold your finger down on any icon until they all start wiggling. Tap the little [x] close boxes to manually quit open apps.

'''Result:''' the day after making the above changes, an iPhone 3GS battery was still at 80% by 5 p.m., compared with 5% the day before before.

The '''Mac Ministry List''' was created to help Mac-using missionaries who had little access to technical support. Over the years, it has grown into CMUG’s online community forum. Join the conversation by subscribing.

At this moment there are currently two Mac Ministry mailing lists, but these are in the process of being merged. The main list is still the recommended list to join.

=Mac Ministry main list =

The '''original and main list''' server software was upgraded to a new program, known as Mailman, on February 19, 2011 with the aim of creating a more reliable and flexible list to serve this community's membership in the years to come. Please read "[[CATUG wiki:Transition Announcements#Letter from the CMUG Board|Letter from the CMUG Board]]" for more information.

To subscribe and receive individual e-mails, [mailto:mac-min-request@catug.org?subject=subscribe click this link] and send the e-mail it creates.

To unsubscribe from the list, [mailto:mac-min-request@catug.org?subject=unsubscribe click this link] and send the e-mail it creates.

Alternatively, or to change your options e.g. to a single e-mail digest of messages, use the new web page for subscriptions:
:http://catug.org/mailman/listinfo/mac-min_catug.org

As a member, to send a message to the main list, email [mailto:mac-ministry@lists.macministry.org mac-ministry@lists.macministry.org] as before. Members who prefer a shorter address may use [mailto:mac-min@catug.org mac-min@catug.org].

==Filtering your emails==
To filter your emails into a separate folder, a simple rule for subject lines containing "[Mac-Min]" will continue to work as it has in the past. However, this would mix off-list replies sent to you into the list traffic.

A more specific way to filter Mac-Min messages is to filter by Mailman's ''"list-id"'' header. All messages sent through Mac-Min will have a list-id header that '''contains''' ''"mac-min_catug.org.catug.org"'' (without quotes).

In Apple Mail, if List-id is not in the list of fields that you can use in Rules, then select Edit Header List. <br/>
[[File:Mail Rules Edit Header List.png|Mail Rules: Where to find "Edit Header List"]]

This brings up the Message Headers window; click on the + tool at the lower left, and add List-id. <br/>
[[File:Mail message headers.png|Message Headers window]]

After this, you will be able to use List-id in the same way that you could already filter on From, To, Subject etc.
<br/>
[[File:Mail rule for Mac-Min.png]]

There are no online email archives of the old or new lists. This is intentional, and preferred by a significant number of CMUG members. Instead, this Wiki was set up partly to serve as a repository of some of the best advice which may be of lasting or wider value.

=Special purpose lists=

This page shows the full text of the transition announcements made by the interim technical team, and the latest advice from CMUG officers.

'''As of January 12, 2011 the mailing list transition is currently on hold for a few days while CMUG officers work out and pray over some of the matters at hand regarding the desired changes to the mailing list – [[#Current status|see below]]. '''
__TOC__
=First announcement=

December 30, 2010

Dear Mac-Minners,

We hope you all had a Merry/Happy Christmas. The Mac-Min Admin team would like to announce a Christmas present to the entire Mac-Min community! We're delivering a shiny new email list… well, not quite in time for Christmas, but just in time to bring in the New Year.

As many of you are all too aware, the number of list software failures has increased over the past few months, meaning that more and more of you are missing out on important discussions. Compounding this problem, list maintenance has been chronically hobbled by Mac-Min's lack of admin access to the software (LetterRip).

In order to ensure that the Mac-Min email community continues to operate smoothly, we have made an executive decision to move the mailing list to a more modern, more appropriate list software (Mailman).

Besides being more reliable, the new software will allow you to set a number of preferences about the messages you receive, such as whether you want to receive plain text or MIME emails, switch between individual and digest modes, suspend your list mail temporarily, and other options.

The new software will allow the admin team to fix technical issues and list emergencies when they occur. Because we will be able to solve these issues before they become a big problem, discussions will be less distracted by administrative issues and will stay more focused on the content that matters to you.

In order to move to the new software, we will need to switch servers. Here's the part that involves you: you will need to subscribe to receive messages from the new Mac-Min address.

What you need to do:

1) Subscribe by visiting http://lists.mac-min.org/mailman/listinfo/mac-ministry_lists.mac-min.org and filling out the fields under the heading "Subscribing to Mac-ministry". The process is simple and only takes about two minutes. You will also need to respond to a confirmation email.

2) Change your email filtering/spam rules, if necessary, to receive messages from [mailto:mac-ministry@lists.mac-min.org mac-ministry@lists.mac-min.org].

3) Beginning Saturday, January 8, send ALL your posts to the new list at [mailto:mac-ministry@lists.mac-min.org mac-ministry@lists.mac-min.org].

4) By January 10, all messages from the old list should have stopped. You can then safely unsubscribe from the old list. To do this, send a blank email from your subscribed address to [mailto:Mac-Ministry-off@list.macministry.org?subject=Unsubscribe%20from%20Mac%20Ministry mac-ministry-off@list.macministry.org] with the subject "Unsubscribe from Mac Ministry".

Please let us know ASAP if you have any difficulty subscribing or receiving messages from the new list. Contact the Admin team by sending an email to [mailto:admins@lists.mac-min.org admins@lists.mac-min.org].

Again, if you want to continue to be a part of Mac-Min, you MUST subscribe to the new list. We recommend that you subscribe before the New Year. To prevent missing any Mac-Min messages, subscribe by January 8. We understand that some are traveling this time of year, and if that's you, just subscribe as soon as you can get back online. For the sake of privacy, the new list (like the old) will NOT have an archive, but if there is a need, we may temporarily add pages for relevant parts of the first few days' digests for the sake of members who are not able to subscribe promptly to the new list. The Wiki at http://mac-min.org/ will still be used to capture info of lasting value.

Please subscribe to the new list straight away, and be ready to move all discussions to the new list on January 8. This old list should continue to function past that date, but only as a signpost redirecting stragglers to our new address.

We are excited about having a more reliable and user-friendly list, and we hope that Mac-Min will be amazingly helpful to all of us in 2011.

January 1, 2011

;A Public Statement from the mac-min.org Tech Team<br />
;or, Explaining Our Actions

As David Burke said of [[CMUG]], "We are, at our core, a family, with all the faults and blessings that come with that association."

For years, Jesse Sng, David Lang and others have been managing the technical and administrative side of CMUG -- maintaining the website, keeping the listserve software running, etc. -- but, over the past couple of years, and for good and understandable reasons, they have not been able to keep up with these administrative tasks. Over the past couple of years, Jesse has been largely unavailable for technical assistance, and in August 2010, he requested the formation of a team of volunteers to take over these duties. Since then, he has been silent on the list, his time and attentions having been diverted to more pressing issues that our Lord has laid on his capable shoulders. David Lang has also been extremely busy with other endeavors, not the least of which involves the production of [[Accordance]], the premier Bible study software for Mac OS (and now iOS).

The members who volunteered in August are listed in the wiki. Note that although the page is headed [[Elections]], there was no change in leadership, but many offers of service. Over the course of the months following Jesse's request, those who had stepped forward on tasks related to the website and list migration, i.e. the undersigned "tech team," put together a proposal for upgrading the online communication capabilities of CMUG, with the assistance of some of the existing CMUG moderators. Over those months, input was solicited from Jesse, David and other CMUG officers on the technical aspects of the proposal; however, as they had indicated in August, they simply did not have time to devote to the technical and administrative side of CMUG. Faced with the option of either moving forward and implementing the proposal, or waiting for an indeterminate time for Jesse and/or David to respond, we opted to treat Jesse's last statement on the matter (as he is still the President of CMUG) as our marching orders.

With that in mind, we proceeded to implement the proposal, which includes the following:

* A new email list running on Mailman (http://list.org) to address multiple problems with the LetterRip-based listserve
* An updated and expanded website, including blog and wiki features to provide a forum for contributing authors, FAQ, public awareness of CMUG, etc.
* Multiple contact points for technical issues, reducing the CMUG-related workload that might be placed on any single individual (we're all volunteers, with many other duties)
* An additional domain, mac-min.org to guard against CMUG becoming homeless (Jesse is the only individual with the ability to renew the macministry.org domain, so if he does not have time to renew it, we will lose that domain just as we lost cmug.org)

Our position regarding Jesse, David, and the current CMUG officers is that they are just that -- the CMUG officers -- and we have no right or desire to remove them from their positions. We implemented these technical changes at their implied request, and, if and when they are able to provide their input or direction regarding these changes, we are absolutely at their service. We have no desire to form a second organization, a splinter group, a "fork" of the CMUG list, or any such thing. Our desire is to use technology, and our God-given gifts in that area, to assist the CMUG officers in furthering the mission of CMUG. To reiterate, we are neither displacing nor replacing the current CMUG officers. Upon reflection, we realize that referring to ourselves as an "admin team" may have added confusion; therefore, we want to be very clear that this team does not seek to provide organizational administration, as that is the responsibility of the CMUG officers. Rather, we seek to provide technical administration in service of the CMUG officers and the entire CMUG family.

We intend to operate with the following provisions and plans:

Jesse Sng is currently the President of CMUG, aided by David Lang, and this team intends to continue to serve under their direction. We believe that holding public CMUG officer elections sometime during the first half of 2011 would be good for the organization, but this is for CMUG's officers rather than the tech team to decide. If new officers and/or tech people are elected, this team will serve under their direction, and will provide appropriate information (passwords, administrative information, etc.) to those elected. There are no reservations here. We agree to follow any lead the current or future President of CMUG dictates.

In His service,
Hello my brothers and sisters,

Thank you for your time of devotion and prayer. I am writing to make you all aware that I have been speaking with CMUG's president, Jesse Sng, for the past couple days on Facebook when our time and schedules allow us to rendezvous. Jesse is asking us to give him a few more days while he and I work out and pray over some of the matters at hand regarding the desired changes to the mailing list. Hopefully we will be able to improve the technology behind the scenes with a level of transparency that will allow all current members to continue simply to enjoy their membership without worrying about where they need to be subscribed. I will try to post again later today. In the meantime, please continue to hold one another in prayer over this issue.
I just wanted to let everyone know that we're not going to leave you hanging. Jesse has analyzed the situation and we are investigating and praying. Subject: Jesse Sng sent you a message on Facebook...<br/>

Please help me relay this to the list for everyone. My computer is packed up and I can't post to the list at the moment. Leaving town and I haven't had anything to eat yet.

---------------------
Hi,

I'm keeping this brief because I'm rushing out the door and will be out of town for the rest of this week. This is the first real break that I've had in months.

We've been busily communicating and working on both new solutions and fixing some of the existing things on the mailing list. This has kept us very occupied as we've been going back and forth.

I can understand that members on the list want something done and to hear some news, but it's not been possible to go back and forth dealing with issues while having to give a minute by minute report.

I've been trying to stay focused on getting necessary work done instead of communicating. I apologize if that has tested everybody's patience.

Here's what we have right now:

1. Current issues on the mailing list have been addressed. There's a combination of things that led to the problems, including stuff that fell in BETWEEN David Lang's and my responsibilities. The iWeb pages that were put up on the site inadvertently nuked whatever other stuff was there to help with list subscription. The subscribe/unsubscribe links on the website (http://macministry.org/Site/Mac_Ministry.html) have been repaired, and the webmaster email now funnels to a group of list admins, enabling us to respond to communications and requests in a timely manner.

We rewrote the headers and footers on the list mailings just before the weekend so that they now contain the proper links and direct to the correct webpage.

Be aware that Apple Mail and other email clients do hide some of the email header info and the list subscribe/unsubscribe email addresses were there all along. The list server software does suppress the sending of footers for styled text email.

These things have been patched pending a total overhaul of the web site. I will NEED people to work with me on this in the coming weeks.

2. We have created an internal forum for moderators and admins which will be comprised of many of those who have previously volunteered. This will not use the list server software but a separate service.

We will be adding these volunteers to the admin group today to get the ball rolling.

3. My long-term plan is to move us to where we can more easily focus on dealing with content and people - both on the web, mailing list, and on places like Facebook.

The goal is to keep the amount of high-level tech admin work and plumbing maintenance to the minimum; in short, to have a group which can be run by those possessing the heart to serve, regardless of individual technical proficiency.

4. I appreciate all the folks who have chosen to step up. The problem that I faced was that the more discussion there was, the more information there was to wade through - there was simply too much noise and that's why I asked David to help filter that for me.

There are 3 key areas to push ahead: (I) a total revamp of the web site (II) keeping the mailing list running and growing and (III) driving CMUG's growth through Facebook and beyond (iPad access?).

There's no reason why we should not be keeping pace in our growth with Apple's tremendous growth in the user base (Macs, iPhone, iPad) etc.

For that to happen, we need members to deal with information, content, and most importantly - People.

This is ultimately a social group of people, the internet is increasingly more about people than technology. I am glad that we have members who can deal with both, but I do see that the major thrust will be on the social interaction side of things.

There's been good input from many and there are some ideas that have been implemented, including the Wiki, which, pending discussion on the admin list, will remain useful adjuncts to CMUG's mission on the web.

---------------------

Please convey this message to the list members and my regards to one and all.

God bless you,

Jesse

Vdanen: note editors list

The '''Mac Ministry List''' was created to help Mac-using missionaries who had little access to technical support. Over the years, it has grown into CMUG’s online community forum. Join the conversation by subscribing.

At this moment there are currently '''two''' Mac Ministry mailing lists. As of December 29, 2010, the new list is the recommended list to join, and to write to with effect from January 8, 2011. The transition announcement below envisaged that by January 10, 2011 members would cease to use the old list. However, this is currently being actively discussed on the old list.

=Mac Ministry via mac-min.org=

This is the '''new list'''. To subscribe and receive individual emails or digests, visit the [http://lists.mac-min.org/mailman/listinfo/mac-ministry_lists.mac-min.org mailman management page]. From here you can subscribe to the list, unsubscribe from the list, and change certain options such as whether to receive messages in regular mode or digest mode.

As mentioned at the foot of that page, there is also a separate list for administrative matters, to save stuff of a boring or technical nature from being sent to all members.

=Mac Ministry via macministry.org (may shortly become defunct)=

If all members join the new list, then from January 10, 2011 we expect that there will be no more messages on the old list. In that case, from that date members can safely unsubscribe from this list and use the new list exclusively. This will ensure that you receive all of the messages, and others will receive your messages in the right place.

To unsubscribe from the old list, [mailto:Mac-Ministry-off@list.macministry.org?subject=Unsubscribe%20from%20Mac%20Ministry click this link] and send the e-mail it creates.

To re-subscribe to the old list and receive individual e-mails, [mailto:Mac-Ministry-on@list.macministry.org?subject=Subscribe%20Me%20to%20Mac%20Ministry click this link] and send the e-mail it creates.

To re-subscribe to the old list and receive a single e-mail digest of messages, [mailto:Mac-Ministry-digest@list.macministry.org?subject=Subscribe%20Me%20to%20Mac%20Ministry%20Digest click this link] and send the e-mail it creates.

=Archives=
There are no online email archives of the old or new lists. This is intentional, and preferred by a significant number of CMUG members. Instead, this Wiki was set up partly to serve as a repository of some of the best advice which may be of lasting or wider value.

=Transition Announcement=

The transition announcement in its entirety is as follows:

----

In Christ's Service,<br />
= Editors List =

There is a mailing list for web editors and those interested in contributing to the blog or wiki. You can subscribe from the [http://lists.mac-min.org/mailman/listinfo/editors_lists.mac-min.org mailman listinfo page]. This is a public list with a private archive to be used for those contributing to, or interested in contributing to, the web presence of CMUG (blog, this wiki).
== What links here ==

This feature does not work to identify redlinks to non-existent pages. For instance,
[[CMUG:Notes for editors]] has been moved; if you click on this red link and then "What links here", the list at [[Special:WhatLinksHere/CMUG:Notes for editors]] includes this page, but not others e.g. the redirect at [[Notes_for_editors]].

Before I updated [[CATUG wiki:Notes for editors]], it had two links for [[CMUG:Formatting guide]], but [[Special:WhatLinksHere/CMUG:Formatting guide]] did not show it.

:I can only imagine this is due to the redirect on Notes for editors being an internal thing, and not part of the wiki text? I'm not sure. Is it a big deal though? I can try and get in the db and do some cleaning, but I'm not sure if it's worth the effort. --[[User:Vdanen|Vdanen]] 08:28, 29 September 2010 (MDT)

::Thanks for suggesting the Special page listing redirects; it's a new one on me. I'll use that in my toolbox on this wiki; I agree that it will be sufficient to discover redirects to non-existent pages.

::As for the issue of other articles not showing up in WhatLinksHere for redlinks, I don't know if I just wasn't looking properly, because it seems to be working now!
::[[Special:WhatLinksHere/CMUG:Formatting_guide]] does now show a test link that I added on another page.
::It's odd that the switch Show/Hide Redirects does nothing, i.e. redirects still don't show, but as stated above I can live with that. - [[User:N Reid|N Reid]] 10:33, 29 September 2010 (MDT)
== Indenting level on talk pages ==

Hi Vincent, I clicked the + button to start this section, so the heading level is automated. It's defaulting in at <nowiki>== ==</nowiki> rather than <nowiki>= =</nowiki>, which is inconsistent with the format that we agreed for article pages. Can you change this, please? - [[User:N Reid|N Reid]] ([[User talk:N Reid|talk]]) 17:50, 29 December 2010 (MST)

:What "+" button? I'm not seeing it? Different skin perhaps. I think it does this as a sub-heading since it thinks <nowiki>=</nowiki> is for the "main" page. I don't know if this is hardcoded or not though (I've never noticed this being configurable in my few years with mediawiki). :--[[User:Vdanen|Vdanen]] 19:26, 29 December 2010 (MST)

::That's interesting, the button now shows as "Add topic". I guess that's part of the new skin. I didn't consciously change the skin; I looked at my prefs and Vector(default) was already selected. - [[User:N Reid|N Reid]] ([[User talk:N Reid|talk]]) 11:14, 31 December 2010 (MST)

== Article titles ==

Under the new skin, the article title appears at the top of the text, the same as in Wikipedia. (Before, it was way off up to the left.) I don't think the <nowiki>{{title}}</nowiki> at the top of each article is needed any more. Do you agree? If so, I'll remove it from the formatting guide. Shall I also go through all the pages and remove the title, or can you change [[Template:Title]] so that it becomes null? - [[User:N Reid|N Reid]] ([[User talk:N Reid|talk]]) 11:18, 31 December 2010 (MST)

:No, I don't think it can be made null. If you don't want to do it, I can do it later today. --[[User:Vdanen|Vdanen]] 11:28, 31 December 2010 (MST)

I didn't consciously change the skin; I looked at my prefs and Vector(default) was already selected. - [[User:N Reid|N Reid]] ([[User talk:N Reid|talk]]) 11:14, 31 December 2010 (MST)

:::Oh nice, I wasn't sure if it would change automatically for people or not. That is good to know. --[[User:Vdanen|Vdanen]] 11:28, 31 December 2010 (MST)

== Article titles ==

Vdanen: update as per the announcement

{{title|Mac Ministry List }}

The Mac Ministry List was created to help Mac-using missionaries who had little access to technical support. Over the years, it has grown into CMUG’s online community forum. Join the conversation by subscribing.

At this moment there are currently '''two''' Mac Ministry mailing lists. As of December 29 2010, the new list is the recommended list to use, and by January 10 2011 we aim to no longer have anyone on or use the old list.

=Mac Ministry via mac-min.org=

To subscribe and receive individual emails or digests, visit the [http://lists.mac-min.org/mailman/listinfo/mac-ministry_lists.mac-min.org mailman management page]. From here you can subscribe to the list, unsubscribe from the list, and change certain options such as whether to receive messages in regular mode or digest mode.

As mentioned at the foot of that page, there is also a separate list for administrative matters, to save stuff of a boring or technical nature from being sent to all members.

=Mac Ministry via macministry.org (now defunct)=

Please unsubscribe from this list and use the new list exclusively. This will ensure that you receive all of the messages, and others will receive your messages in the right place.

To unsubscribe from the list, [mailto:Mac-Ministry-off@list.macministry.org?subject=Unsubscribe%20from%20Mac%20Ministry click this link] and send the e-mail it creates.

----

2) Change your email filtering/spam rules, if necessary, to receive messages from mac-ministry@lists.mac-min.org .

3) Beginning Saturday, January 8, send ALL your posts to the new list at mac-ministry@lists.mac-min.org .

4) By January 10, all messages from the old list should have stopped. You can then safely unsubscribe from the old list. To do this, send a blank email from your subscribed address to mac-ministry-off@list.macministry.org with the subject "Unsubscribe from Mac Ministry".

Please let us know ASAP if you have any difficulty subscribing or receiving messages from the new list. Contact the Admin team by sending an email to admins@lists.mac-min.org.

In Christ's Service,
Hey, nice work on the home page! - [[User:N Reid|N Reid]] 08:19, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

:Thanks. =) We need a "getting started guide" or a "dummies guide to our wiki" or something that tells people how to add new content, etc; see the thread on mac-min. It also needs to be linked to from the front page; I've added a link to the editor's guide for now. --[[User:Vdanen|Vdanen]] 16:41, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

== What links here ==

Search me why it '''does''' show this user talk page! - [[User:N Reid|N Reid]] 01:39, 29 September 2010 (MDT)

What "+" button? I'm not seeing it? Different skin perhaps. I think it does this as a sub-heading since it thinks <nowiki>=</nowiki> is for the "main" page. I don't know if this is hardcoded or not though (I've never noticed this being configurable in my few years with mediawiki). --[[User:Vdanen|Vdanen]] 19:26, 29 December 2010 (MST)

== What links here ==

I can only imagine this is due to the redirect on Notes for editors being an internal thing, and not part of the wiki text? I'm not sure. Is it a big deal though? I can try and get in the db and do some cleaning, but I'm not sure if it's worth the effort. --[[User:Vdanen|Vdanen]] 08:28, 29 September 2010 (MDT)

The Mac Ministry List was created to help Mac-using missionaries who had little access to technical support. Over the years, it has grown into CMUG’s online community forum. Join the conversation by subscribing.

At this moment there are currently '''two''' Mac Ministry mailing lists. One is the old, still functioning list, and one is what may possibly replace it (then again, it may not).

{{title|Who Says There's No Christian Software for the Mac?}}

''Steal a glance at the software shelves of your local Christian bookstore, and you might be tempted to conclude that there's no Christian software for the Mac. But as most Mac users soon learn, lack of shelf space doesn't necessarily mean a lack of good software. The trick is knowing where to find it. Toward that end, here is a partial list of software that is of interest to Christian Mac users, along with links to more information.''

= Bible Study Software =

When it comes to Bible study software, Mac users have far fewer choices than their Windows-using brethren. But who cares? As with other kinds of software, what the Mac lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality. Though you won't know it by looking at the shelves, the Mac has the best commercial Bible software available, the best freeware Bible program available, and equal access to the broadest collection of classic Christian books available.

[http://www.accordancebible.com/ Accordance Bible Software]: Because I help to develop Accordance Bible Software, I'll try to stick to the facts rather than giving you the sales pitch. Accordance is the only commercial Bible program I'm aware of developed exclusively for the Mac, and it includes a host of powerful features that enable you to study the Bible in ways you may not have imagined possible. Download the free demo and go through the included Apple Guide tutorial, and you won't need my sales pitch.

[http://www.online-bible.com/maconlinebible.html Online Bible]: Powerful, easy to use, and extremely affordable (most modules are freely available for download, or you can purchase an inexpensive CD-ROM), the Online Bible was a prime reason why many commercial Bible software developers killed their Mac products. They just couldn't compete with this freeware program developed by Ken Hamel.

[http://www.ageslibrary.com/ AGES Digital Library]: AGES Software produces a variety of CD-ROMs which contain large collections of classic Christian books in Adobe Acrobat format. Though not as sophisticated as most specialized Bible programs, the Adobe Acrobat interface is more than adequate for viewing these electronic books and even lets you do some basic searches. Best of all, AGES' products are all extremely affordable.

[http://www.brs-inc.com/bible/ Verse Search]: One of the oldest Bible programs still available for the Mac is Verse Search by Bible Research Systems. While other commercial software vendors have abandoned their Mac products to concentrate on Windows, Bible Research Systems has continued to update its Macintosh version alongside the Windows version.

[http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/9983/BibleViewer.html Bible Viewer]: This simple shareware Bible search engine is available in two versions: King James or World English Bible (WEB), but as far as I can tell, you can only use one or the other. If you're gonna go with shareware, you'll find Online Bible to be much more powerful and flexible.

= Biblical Geography =

In addition to software which enables you to study the text of the Bible, you can use these products to learn more about the lands of the Bible.

[http://www.accordancebible.com/products/atlas.htm Accordance Bible Atlas]: The Accordance Bible Atlas enables you to explore the lands of the Bible through completely customizable maps, animated routes, detailed site descriptions, and the ability to "fly through" three-dimensional maps of Palestine and the Mediterranean. It can be used as a stand-alone or integrated seamlessly with Accordance Bible Software.

[http://www.biblemaps.com/ Manna Bible Maps]: A SuperCard-based collection of 66 maps (additional maps are available in PDF format), over 200 color photographs of Biblical sites, timelines, genealogies, and detailed background information. A downloadable demo is available.

[http://www.accordancebible.com/photo.htm Accordance Bible Lands PhotoGuide]: An extensive collection of more than 640 high-quality photographs with indepth information about the most important Biblical sites. It can be used as a stand-alone or integrated seamlessly with Accordance Bible Software and the Accordance Bible Atlas.

[http://www.zondervan.com/0310211360.htm Zondervan Image Archives]: This CD-ROM contains more than 5,000 photographs of Biblical locations, but they are so small and low-resolution as to be practically unusable. Even worse, the images are poorly organized and must be accessed through a kludgy image cataloguing program that is very un-Mac-like.

= Edutainment =

Many of the best Christian edutainment titles are available for both the Mac and the PC. And if you're like me, you take great satisfaction in flipping past the twenty-step installation instructions for Windows-users to read something like, "Insert the CD-ROM and double-click the program icon." Many of these products have been thoroughly reviewed by the people at [http://www.sundaysoftware.com/ Sunday School Software Ministries], so wherever possible, I've included links to those reviews. One of them I reviewed several years ago for the CMUG newsletter, and I've included a link to that review as well.

[http://www.gospelcom.net/rbc/dhp/computer/0185.shtml Bible Foundations with Philip Yancey]: This multimedia CD-ROM set features nearly 200 interactive lessons covering Genesis through Revelation. Includes maps, charts, pictures, text, and audio.

[http://www.gospelcom.net/rbc/dhp/computer/0592.shtml The Life of Christ]: Includes 40 multimedia lessons on the life of Christ, followed by quizzes and a Myst-like adventure game. Check out the Sunday School Software [http://www.sundaysoftware.com/christ.html review] of this product.

[http://www.crosscountrysoftware.com/giants_of_the_faith.html Giants of the Faith]: This CD-ROM contains multimedia lessons on the lives of sixteen important Christian men from the British Isles. There are sections on Bible Translators and Reformers, Founders of Hymnology, Missionaries and Evangelists, and Religious Literary Masters.

[http://www.sundaysoftware.com/path.htm Pathways Through Jerusalem]: This two CD-ROM set features nine onscreen video guides who each lead you along a particular pathway through Jerusalem. King David, King Herod, Queen Helena, Dirk the Crusader, and Suleiman the Magnificent each give you a feel for what Jerusalem was like during their respective historical periods. In addition, there are four pathways through the modern city, led by a Jew, a Christian, a Palestinian Muslim, and a Secular tour bus operator. Check out the Sunday School Software [http://www.sundaysoftware.com/path.htm review] of this product.

[http://www.sundaysoftware.com/diarypri.htm A Disciple's Diary]: This multimedia CD-ROM, which appears to be in limited supply, presents the life of Christ in ten lessons, which can be accessed either from a reference archive or in the context of a Quest-oriented game.

To Be Continued . . . We have really just begun to scratch the surface of all the great Christian software that's available for the Mac, and this article is already too long as it is. We have yet to cover children's titles, church management software, journaling software, etc. So look for another installment of Who Says There's No Christian Software for the Mac? in the coming weeks. And in the meantime, if you're aware of some software that is of interest to Christian Mac users that you feel should be included in this series of articles, please [mailto:cmugdave@earthlink.net e-mail me] and let me know about it.

* Bob S: web design
* Rory G: list moderator
* Clive R: list moderator

{{title|Remote control of another computer}}

'''Remote control of another computer''' is possible using a variety of software, some free, some chargeable.

iChat screen sharing is the easiest to set up, but has limitations compared to its brother app "Screen Sharing". Both are free. Although there are paid applications that you can use, Screen Sharing is reliable and probably does everything you need.
__TOC__

==iChat==
Between two Macs, '''iChat''' can be used. Start an iChat session, click the button at the bottom that looks like two rectangles, have the other person accept.

==Screen sharing==
A user can access "Screen Sharing" by starting a vnc:// connection in a web browser or "Connect to Server" window.
Enter the other user's IP address.
Dragging the vnc URL to the dock allows a user to reach, say, a relative's desktop with one click.

If the person being helped is a long distance away, or abroad, it's important to be able to do maintenance without being in physical control of the computer. Sometimes it may be necessary to ask the other person to assist with physical tasks such as reconnecting USB devices or insert CDs, but everything else can be done by remote control.

Screen Sharing is a fairly reliable application, and you shouldn't have too many connection problems once you have your firewalls and routers configured properly. But if you do have difficulty connecting, it could be due to a number of factors, some of which follow. If the remote user disables the Screen Sharing service, you will not be able to connect. If the remote computer is asleep and not connected to the internet via ethernet, there is no way to remotely wake the computer from sleep. If either computer is engaged in heavy internet or CPU activity, Screen Sharing can be so slow as to be unusable. If settings in the router, modem, or firewall have been changed, it may affect Screen Sharing. Therefore, basic troubleshooting involves making sure both computers can connect to the internet, making sure you are using the current IP address of the remote computer, and restarting devices (the remote computer, the local computer, routers).

With Snow Leopard, Screen Sharing works better than it did with Leopard. There is a weird and startling bug that allows the remote user to move your mouse around your screen if you enter Exposé.

==Some alternatives==

* [http://www.logmein.com/ LogMeIn.com] is great and allows a free trial.

* [http://www.apple.com/remotedesktop/ Apple Remote Desktop] can be used to manage Macs on a network, but is not free.

* [http://www.teamviewer.com TeamViewer]

* [http://www.netopia.com/software/products/tb2/ Timbuktu] has a long presence in this field.

* [http://www.yazsoft.com/products/sharetool/ ShareTool] is a great remote login tool, using SSH for encryption; not free but works extremely well and allows Bonjour connections to other systems on the remote LAN.

{{title|Notes for editors}}

This page gives guidance to editors on what to contribute to this CMUG Wiki, and how to achieve a sufficiently consistent appearance.

==Consent==
First of all, before adding information from emails sent to [[Mac-Min]], consider whether the writer might not want the information published openly, or would not want to be identified in the credits. If in doubt, ask the writer for his/her consent before adding material to the Wiki. Alternatively, rewrite it, removing any personal touches or potentially sensitive info.

==Sources==
Info may be added from a single Mac-Min email, amalgamated from a thread, converted from an article on the old CMUG site, expanded from one of the above, or created from scratch.

Add a "Credits" section at the end of the article to say which of these it is, and mention the main contributor(s) if they consent.

==Tone==
If a single email covers a subject sufficiently to publish as it stands, there is no need to rewrite it, if the author consents to be published and credited. Provided the author consents to it being published, it may be reused with little effort by the Wiki editor.

It is fine for articles on the CMUG Wiki to vary in tone. We do not pretend to be an encyclopedia or a magazine. An informal style may attract new members to join the [[Mac Ministry List]].

==Standard headings==
The title for the page should be entered at the top, enclosed like this: <nowiki> {{title|Notes for editors}} </nowiki>.

This means that the title can be different from the name of the page, e.g. where additional words help to add clarity. The title of this page is shorter, omitting the Wiki "namespace" code ''CMUG:''. However, so that the indexing does not confuse readers, it should be similar and start with the same word(s).

Section headings should be enclosed by multiple == characters, as shown at [[CMUG: Formatting guide]].

Where relevant, the following standard headings should appear at the end of the page, in this sequence:
*Credits
*See also
*External links

==Table of contents==
If there are four or more headings, a Table of Contents will appear automatically at the top. Use the code <nowiki>__TOC__ at the end of the first section to make it appear there. If a page is so short that it doesn't need a table of contents, use __NOTOC__ to suppress the automatic one. </nowiki>

==Dates==
Dates should be written in one of these patterns:
*Mar 4, 2010
*March 4, 2010

Do not use only numbers, as 3/4/10 means March 4th in the US but 3rd April in the UK.

==Categories==
New pages are added into one or more relevant categories by including the category codes at the end of the page. This one has <nowiki>[[Category:CMUG]]</nowiki>. It doesn't display that code on the page, but linka to the categories appear below the end of the article. This gives readers another way to navigate between similar articles.

If the article should be indexed by something other than the first word of the page name, then add a bar followed by the sort key, e.g.
:<nowiki>[[Category:Bible Software|2006]]</nowiki>
:<nowiki>[[Category:News|Bible Software 2006]]</nowiki>

== Display of page name ==

Hi Vince,

Can you change the skin so that the page name displays lower down, like it does on Wikipedia? I note that you re-typed the page title at the top of the [[Mac Bible Software Update November 2005|Bible software pages]] between single = marks. This looks fine but allows for potential confusion if the page is moved, and seems unnecessary to me. - [[User:N Reid|N Reid]] 10:57, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

This is doable, but this prevents us from being as free as we want. I.e. we could use the name, for example, "Adding_Ram" as the page name but use "Adding Ram to an OS X Computer" as the page title by using the single = marks. I've always done it like this because it adds more flexibility, and otherwise if you want to just rename/rephrase the title of a page, you don't have to rename the page itself. In light of that, WDYT? --[[User:Vdanen|Vdanen]] 14:48, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

:Fair enough. It looks fine on pages with only the main heading or a couple more. But once the TOC appears, can you stop the main title being in the TOC, and the remaining headings being indented? e.g. [http://wiki.annvix.ws/index.php?title=Adding_RAM&oldid=86 this permalink]. Or should the title be at the same level as the other headings like [http://wiki.annvix.ws/index.php?title=Adding_RAM&oldid=90 this]? - [[User:N Reid|N Reid]] 18:27, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

::We can do what I do on my other wiki: http://annvix.org/index.php?title=Documentation&action=edit where the title uses a template (i.e. { { title|Documentation } }) --[[User:Vdanen|Vdanen]] 18:51, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

:::Fine, that's neat! I've added a br/ tag a the end of [[template:title]] to force a line break in case editors don't leave an empty line below it, like my user page. - [[User:N Reid|N Reid]] 19:31, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

::::Doesn't look like it. You'll need to leave a blank line or it will think it is 'wiki-style'; i.e. for separate paragraphs, you need to have a blank line between or it will think they are the same paragraph

kinda
like
this

:That's exactly what I'm getting at. It worked yesterday using the Title template with the br at the end (before you removed it), and this test version works on my talk page: [http://wiki.annvix.ws/index.php?title=User:N_Reid&oldid=121 N Reid (permalink)] 18:31, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

::Weird... it didn't seem like it was working. I put in a double-br now, so it'll work... might look off if people put in a blank vs don't (an extra space) but at least it works now. It didn't look like it had worked with just a single br, but maybe I'm losing my mind =)

== Partial deletion request ==

I should not have added the original version of the remote control article without the original writer's consent. If I have admin privileges here, I'm not aware how to use them. I don't know how easy it is to delete page history, but please could you remove the history from that one?

Alternatively, if you simply delete the whole article, I'll re-add the current version as I've taken a copy elsewhere. - [[User:N Reid|N Reid]] 20:55, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

::Unfortunately, I don't think this will fully work. I deleted it and restored the last revision, so there are 7 edits that are removed. I don't know if it's because I'm an admin, or if any logged in user can see it, but I can see the old revisions when asked if I want to restore them. As an anonymous visitor in a different browser, I can't see the deleted history. There is this note, however:

:::If you restore the page, all revisions will be restored to the history. If a new page with the same name has been created since the deletion, the restored revisions will appear in the prior history.

::That makes me think at we should then not use names at all when we post things unless the author specifically requests attribution... it's easier to add later than it is to remove. Something for your policy page perhaps?

::We can do what I do on my other wiki: http://annvix.org/index.php?title=Documentation&action=edit where the title uses a template (i.e. { { title|Documentation } }) --[[User:Vdanen|Vdanen]] 18:51, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

It didn't look like it had worked with just a single br, but maybe I'm losing my mind =)

here’s an interesting wiki with some nice plugins we may want to look at later: http://creationwiki.org/Special:Version
