N Reid: update ClamXAV pricing

This page presents some personal views from CATUG members about anti virus software (AV, AVS) for Macintosh.

The question
:Hi All,

:I know this was briefly discussed a short bit ago, but I still have some questions. I know having an Anti-Virus program on a Mac is kind of redundant, but for my PC friends who I may inadvertently send one to, I like having one. I have ClamX installed, but Sophos looks pretty good, also. Which would you all recommend, ClamX or Sophos, and why.

:Thanks,
:Bill.

First answer
If it's just to keep you from inadvertently passing on virus-infected files, I would think it not worth putting too much effort into thinking over. Just use what you are using. ;-)

:That's pretty much what I was thinking. But... IF a Mac virus ever DOES come down the pike, I'd like to be prepared.
:What WOULD you recommend - just in case?

Nothing. Look. If a some sort of malware does come down the pike, the only real threat will be the first day, and nobody will be prepared, especially those who are depending on AV software, because they think they will be prepared--but they won't be. So, all you get with AV software is a false sense of security.

Jon Glass

Another short answer
For what it's worth, I use VirusBarrier X6 from Intego. I have had no problems with it at all. It has caught viruses on the flash drives of PC users when I was in seminary. And it does popup whenever a questionable website is clicked.

Rev. Rory A. Gillespie

A longer answer
There are two questions here. First, it is likely that you would hear about the first mac virus in plenty of time to download and install an AV app before becoming infected. It is even more likely that your antivirus of choice will cause other problems (memory, slowness, incompatibilities). People fear that a virus might knock out their internet, so it's good to have the AV downloaded, just in case. But If you can't reach the Internet because of a virus infection, then you won't be able to download the updated virus definitions either. To sum up, if you're trying to protect your own mac from potential virus infections, I recommend that you install an antivirus program only when there is a Mac virus in the wild, and not an hour before. You can keep the AV website in your bookmarks, if you want to.

The second issue, that of protecting friends' PCs, is an issue of following the golden rule. If you were a PC user who kept getting viruses because a Mac-using friend sends you infected attachments, what would you want your Mac friend to do? Having viruses trash your files and cripple your computer is not a laughing matter. Just because your computer is immune (the stronger brother), you are not free to mess up your friend's vulnerable computer (the weaker brother). Although, perhaps the golden rule would also suggest that you get them to switch to a Mac....

And yes, following the golden rule also means that if you drive a truck or SUV, you are morally obligated to drive extra carefully, so you don't kill people in lighter vehicles.

If your Mac is infecting friends' PCs, then yes, you should either install an AV application or help your PC friend to get a better AV.... If you get a Mac AV, make sure it's only scanning your email and the folders that are holding these infected files (downloads folder, email mbox, attachments folder, etc). Do not have it scan your entire hard drive.

Try ClamXAV, it's free.

Sophos looks like it's free too. I just looked at a couple videos on the Sophos website where they use fear tactics and twist the truth. They say that the number of mac viruses is increasing and that your mac is just as vulnerable as a PC. The only specific example they give is MacCinema, which is just a malicious DNS changer. They say that you couldn't possibly be able to know if an app is malicious, that's why you need Sophos. They forget to mention that you shouldn't be downloading and installing unknown apps, and that you should always google apps before installing them. The top 8 google search results for MacCinema are about its malicious nature.

Maybe Sophos's app does really work, but because of their deceptive marketing, I don't trust them. I'll stick with ClamXAV.

Aaron

:Update on ClamXAV: ClamXAV is no longer free, but $30 annually.

The bottom line
Hello,

Being as kind as possible............ I'm imagining a few hundred readers of your question rolling their collective eyes.

This item has been asked and answered so many times in the past, I think there's a general reluctance to go over the topic again. I am guilty of some of the most humorous [read: sarcastic] posts on this point, so I'll be of little help.

It is my personal view that recipients of your emails -- which are HIGHLY unlikely to contain anything harmful -- are themselves responsible for their own safety. If they want to stop getting infected, they should buy a better computer or install the preventive software of their choice.

Analogy: If you drive a strong, sturdy vehicle and someone else drives a cheap, cheesy piece of unsafe junk, these are both choices you've individually made. If an accident occurs, it's not your responsibility to somehow have a "safer accident" that doesn't smush their cheap, cheesy vehicle into a ball of smoking, leaking tinfoil.

They made a choice.

PC users make a choice.

If you choose the festoon your Mac with anti-virus software so your PC friends don't have to make safe choices, that's up to you, but it is my personal view we are not ultimately responsible for their bad choice. All commercial versions of Mac AVS do the same thing: Make money for those who sell them. Freeware versions of AVS do absolutely nothing useful for the Mac owner, and have spotty support. You have your choice: Software that costs you money and does nothing, or software that is free and does nothing.

Aaron

:Update on ClamXAV: from July 2015, ClamXAV is no longer free, but $30.
:Anyone who previously made a voluntary payment for the program can retrieve their registration here and will not have to pay for upgrades. This is simple if you still use the same email address.

From October 2011 to August 2015 we had a blog in our own domain: Of Macs 'n' Min at macsnmin.catug.org. There is an archived version at the Internet Archive.

A couple of earlier trial blogs, and the initial version of Of Macs 'n' Min, were at:
*macministry.org/blog (2005–09) (now dead)
*macsnmin.blogspot.com (2007–08) (now dead)
*http://macsnmin.wordpress.com (June–Oct 2011)

This wiki moved to wiki.catug.org in February 2011, but we kept its recent home mac-min.org as a redirect until 2012, along with macministry.org which we had been using since 2005. We also got the group's original website c-mug.org back as a mirror in 2011–12 – not currently available at archive.org.

Various other websites refer to the Christian Macintosh User Group at cmug.org but unfortunately something went wrong with renewing the domain, again, and we lost that one. Whoever is parking on it has demanded a ridiculous fee that we will obviously not pay. Old versions from November 1998 to January 2010 are stored at the Internet Archive.

The oldest copy of our site at the Internet Archive was c-mug.org from December 1996.

The Online Bible (OLB) is one of the oldest and still most cost effective, high quality Bible programs available for Mac. OLB continues to be known for its ease of use coupled with an abundance of Bible versions and translations in some 25 different languages, the inclusion of many classic commentaries, Bible dictionaries (including ISBE), and original language resources.

For the person with minimal or no knowledge of the Greek language, there is an interlinear version of the Textus Receptus (Stephens 1550). There are also parsing and declension options available in several Greek texts. There are two versions of the Old Testament Hebrew: one is regular and the other uses a morphologically-separated format. The Old Testament is also available in the Greek Septuagint and the whole Bible in the Latin Vulgate.

One of the features that I use a lot is highlighting Strong's Number in the lexicon window and then finding every occasion that the word in Greek or Hebrew is used. Lexicons included are Strong's for the whole Bible, Thayers for the N.T. and Brown, Driver & Briggs with Gesenius for the O.T. Also, there is the option to create your own Greek and Hebrew notes or lexicons.

Perhaps one of the most tempting factors is that the OLB application itself and many of the modules are free and downloadable from their web site. Even purchasing the Classic CD for $39.95 or the Deluxe CD for $79.95 is still a great value.

On the downside, OLB does not contain any of the newer commentaries or dictionaries, as all the OLB modules are copyright-free and in the public domain. There is other software that covers this gap.

For those who used Online Bible under Mac Classic (systems 7 through 9), all you have to do is replace the old application with the new application currently in version 4.2.1. All the modules are still the same and work the same as they did under Classic. There are a few small differences between Classic and OS X. The F7 key for instant insertion of Bible texts in any word processing program, initially missing, has been replaced by Command-7. A Toolbar has been added; for small screens this is not necessary as it only reproduces the same options available in the top menu bar, or even more handy the right click (Control click) which opens a submenu with all of the options immediately available.

2015 version
Online Bible released a new 2015 CD with additional languages and resources. This had already been released for Windows in 2012.

The Macintosh version 4.2.1 can still be downloaded as a free Starter Pack, and works fine under Mac OS 10.11 (El Capitan). It was temporarily not working under the initial version of Sierra, but once again works fine after Apple released the patch OS 10.12.2.

As of 2020, the website states that the app "runs well with MacOS up until High Sierra (10.13) which gives some problems."

iOS version
As of 2016 there is at last a version for iPad and iPhone, provided they run iOS version 8 or higher.

The advice on websites is of course useful worldwide. We acknowledge that the other services recommended on this page are centred on the United States. For local help elsewhere in the world, if it's not cost-effective to send your kit to the US, join the List and ask by email.

DIY repair manuals
iFixit.com is a website with extensive do-it-yourself repair manuals, disassembly diagrams, etc. You can also buy replacement parts on the site.

See also CATUG member Drew Janssen's page here on disassembling Apple laptops.

Replacing cracked glass on iPhones
CATUG member Jon Glass (sounds like an expert on the topic!) suggests:
:How badly is it busted? If touch still works, then it's probably just the laminated external glass. It's probably easy enough to replace yourself. Check YouTube tutorials to see how easy.

:If you do this, I would offer one suggestion. Lots of them show using a hair dryer or heating gun to loosen the glue holding the glass down. Don't. I have a sock full of rice. I simply popped that into the microwave for two minutes or so, and laid it over my phone. I did this a couple times to make sure the glue was good and soft, and all the pieces came off easily.

Repair services
For general repairs e.g. broken screens, our members recommend the service from the following. <!--Except where noted,--> They all repair both Mac computers and Apple iOS devices.

In 2017 Apple introduced the split-screen feature on iPads as part of iOS 11.

This makes multi-tasking easier on the iPad, e.g. dragging links or images from one app to another, whereas before you would have had to copy & paste.

AppleInsider demonstrated this well with a YouTube video.

However, the features are limited on some older iPads (see the comments under the video).

N Reid: remove obsolete IClean Language and Growl; update notes and links on permissions

Utility software is any kind of system software designed to help analyze, configure, optimize or maintain the computer. (Utility programs are so classified in contrast with application software programs (apps). The latter are the reasons for having a computer, as they generally do something useful or entertaining, e.g. helping you to write a Bible study, make music or play a game.)

The following wiki pages and other links cover utility programs that have been recommended on the Mac-Ministry List.

Precautions for being connected
*Little Snitch is our top recommendation. Read about it at here at MacUpdate.

*Anti-Virus Software for Macintosh

*Internet safety products for internet filtering, accountability and safety

Hard disk repair
Apple's Disk Utility, installed on every Mac by default, does some basic repairs. "Repair Permissions" used to be worth running periodically, especially before and after major software installations or updates. In versions of macOS around 2014 it showed a large number of warnings that could safely be ignored, see this archived Apple Support page.

More recent versions of macOS manage permissions better, and it is no longer necessary to Repair Permissions on a routine basis. Permissions can still be reset if necessary; see this 2019 Apple support page.

If you need more than that, the good tools do not come cheap. Our best buys are:
*DiskWarrior (MacUpdate link) first, then:
*TechToolPro (MacUpdate)
*Drive Genius (MacUpdate)

Managing files
*OnyX, a free program to run system maintenance, configure hidden system options and delete old cache files (see OnyX at MacUpdate)

*Cocktail, a non-free but highly-rated alternative

*Disk Inventory X to see what's taking up space on your Mac

*To delete apps, AppDelete (shareware) puts all of the pieces in one file in your trash where it will remain until you delete your trash, or AppCleaner (free)

*IExplorer to manage files on your iPhone/ iPad / iPod Touch from your Mac

;Warning
Note that CATUG members do NOT recommend a widely-advertised app called MacKeeper.

Other stuff to manage your Mac
*Activity Monitor is a free Apple utility which monitors CPU and memory use, among other things.
*Caffeine keeps the Mac awake; you don't want it going to sleep during backups, downloads etc.
*Mactracker tells you whether you can upgrade to the latest operating system, and loads more useful info about your Apple Mac model.

Burning CDs and DVDs
The Mac's standard apps (iTunes, iDVD, Disk Utility) will do the basics. If you want an app to do more, the market leader is called Toast, but a free alternative which probably does all you need is Burn.

The problem
Whenever the display goes to sleep on my MacBook, the drive shuts down and stops the back-up. This 2011 MacBook likes to meet energy guidelines and sleeps a lot, even with settings tweaked to the max in System prefs.
;Recommendation in 2010
I just ran iCleanLanguage and gained 3 GB. That is good as my MacBook only has a 160 GB hard drive. It removes the 100 (?) excess languages that automatically come with the system and many applications. I removed everything but Spanish. English automatically stays as the default language. Because of conflicts it does not remove languages from Adobe products and MS Office, but 3 GB is a sizeable gain in hard drive space. The program is free, a donation is optional.

Growl was a utility for macOS 10.5 (Leopard) to 10.9 (Mavericks) that could be tailored to notify the user of various kinds of information from other apps. This could be presented in a translucent popup in a corner of the screen, or in other ways if the user prefers.

It is no longer needed in more recent versions of macOS which have built-in support for notifications.

Growl 1.2
;Recommendation
Growl is a notification utility. You can find in the System Preferences. You can get various notifications, too many to list, and there are some that run with Mail, iTunes and other programs too. You can also get some plugins like HardwareGrowler that notify you of when things connect or disconnect. I find it pretty handy, and I got mine set up to flash me a little black box in the upper right corner whenever I get a notification. Worth looking into before you get rid of it...

Some things Growl notifies you of:
*What the next song on iTunes is playing. I've been listening to a site of acoustic Christian music (from Word of Truth) and it comes in as an iTunes stream, so if I'm working in Photoshop, even in full screen mode, it tells me what tune is playing as soon as it starts.
*With Mail, it'll tell me when new mail arrives and who it's from.
*With HardwareGrowler it tells me whenever I get connect or disconnect from USB devices, hard disk and CD/DVD mounting.
*When pages get refreshed in most browsers.
*Xmarks gets updated.
*RipIt is finished ripping a DVD
*Transmit finishes an upload...
*And so on...

It depends on the software vendor as to how much they put into it, and it is getting more popular... So much so that someone built a similar package for Windows...

I wouldn't say it's a must-have, but personally I'm glad I have it.
- Wm. Chris Howard

;Availability
Growl 1.2 was open source software and is still available free of charge, e.g. from MacUpdate.

Growl 1.3 was released after Apple's 2011 release of OS X 10.7 (Lion). This version of Growl is no longer a System Preference pane, but an independent app. It is also no longer free, but available for US $1.99 from the Mac App Store. Initial reviews are mixed. Updating to 1.3 was not mandatory as Growl 1.2 still works under Lion.

GrowlMail and GrowlTunesPlugin were supported independently by Rudy Richter.

The last version was Growl 2.1.3 in 2013, for OS X 10.7 Lion through to 10.9 Mavericks.

N Reid: /* Screen sharing */ For info: Tun Mac screen sharing on or off in Apple's macOS User Guide.

Remote control of another computer is possible using a variety of software, some free, some chargeable.

Screen sharing using Apple's chat program Messages is the easiest to set up, but has limitations compared to its brother app "Screen Sharing". Both are free. Although there are paid applications that you can use, Screen Sharing is reliable and probably does everything you need.
__TOC__
Messages
Between two Macs, Messages can be used to share the screen. See http://support.apple.com/kb/PH15056

In older versions of the Mac software, use iChat. Start an iChat session, click the button at the bottom that looks like two rectangles, have the other person accept.

Screen sharing
A user can access "Screen Sharing" by starting a vnc:// connection in a web browser or "Connect to Server" window.
Enter the other user's IP address.
Dragging the vnc URL to the dock allows a user to reach, say, a relative's desktop with one click.

If the person being helped is a long distance away, or abroad, it's important to be able to do maintenance without being in physical control of the computer. Sometimes it may be necessary to ask the other person to assist with physical tasks such as reconnecting USB devices or insert CDs, but everything else can be done by remote control.

Screen Sharing is a fairly reliable application, and you shouldn't have too many connection problems once you have your firewalls and routers configured properly. But if you do have difficulty connecting, it could be due to a number of factors, some of which follow. If the remote user disables the Screen Sharing service, you will not be able to connect. If the remote computer is asleep and not connected to the internet via ethernet, there is no way to remotely wake the computer from sleep. If either computer is engaged in heavy internet or CPU activity, Screen Sharing can be so slow as to be unusable. If settings in the router, modem, or firewall have been changed, it may affect Screen Sharing. Therefore, basic troubleshooting involves making sure both computers can connect to the internet, making sure you are using the current IP address of the remote computer, and restarting devices (the remote computer, the local computer, routers).

For more info, see: Turn Mac screen sharing on or off in Apple's macOS User Guide.

Some alternatives
* LogMeIn.com is great and allows a free trial. When it expires they'll try and persuade you to pay, but you can continue using it free, just for remote control; what you will not get is file transfer.

* Microsoft Remote Desktop (see also Microsoft Remote Desktop Clients) will work If the other computer has Windows. It is free.

* Apple Remote Desktop can be used to manage Macs on a network, but is not free.

* TeamViewer is free for personal use.

* Timbuktu has a long presence in this field. It was developed by netopia.com but is now owned by Arris. They do not seem to be updating their own website promptly for the latest versions of this product, so see MacUpdate, this Netopia upgrade page and this discussion at the Apple support forum.

* ShareTool<!-- formerly Yazsoft.com --> is a great remote login tool, using SSH for encryption; not free but works extremely well and allows Bonjour connections to other systems on the remote LAN.

* Back To My Mac is a macOS feature for screen and file sharing between two Macs that are signed in to the same iCloud account. It was introduced in 2007 but only worked under some conditions. It is no longer supported under macOS 10.14 Mojave. See this 2018 column in TidBITS. From July 2019, it will no longer be available in any version of macOS (see Apple).

Just viewing
* Skype has a Share button, which enables you to show the other person all or part of your screen. However, this is just viewing, not remote control.
*Freebinar allows one or more (up to 150) people to watch, and is free.

Precautions
If you have to give someone access to your computer but are worried about security, then:
*give them only screen sharing access (not invisible access like file sharing and remote login)
*make sure your keychain and password storage files are locked
*watch what they are doing the whole time.
When they are done,
*turn off screen sharing
*then change the access password (in that order!)

Never leave remote login turned on if the machine has weak (or blank) user passwords.

Although Accordance was initially developed for the Mac OS and iOS, it now also runs on Windows and Android.
OakTree Software
OakTree Software, Inc. is based in Altamonte Springs, Florida, USA. The company has focused on areas of special interest, particularly the study of Biblical texts. Its specific goals are:

*Offering innovative and powerful features which cannot be found anywhere else
*Providing the most intuitive, elegant, and easy-to-use interface possible
*Providing a wide range of useful resources like texts, dictionaries, & commentaries, for Bible study.

Program history
Roy Brown, OakTree Software's president and application developer, created one of the first Bible programs available for the Macintosh, known as ThePerfectWord, in 1988. ThePerfectWord was later bought by another company and renamed MacBible.
By the early 1990s there were a number of good general Bible study programs for the Mac. However, Brown saw the need for a new program which would make it easy to engage in more sophisticated kinds of Bible study, enabling scholars and pastors to do in-depth analysis of the original Greek and Hebrew texts of the Bible. Accordance 1.0 was released in February 1994, and welcomed for its power and ease of use.

A version of Accordance 5 rewritten to run natively under Mac OS X was released at the start of 2002.
The company has continued to add and improve features. Version 8 was released in May 2008 and introduced a universal binary for Intel-based Macs. The latest version 12 was released in November 2016.
Even when it was a product developed exclusively for the Mac OS, Accordance also ran on PCs using the Basilisk II emulator. A Windows-native version was released in 2013.
Modules available
The program is centered on the Biblical text, but has many additional texts. There are many optional modules, detailed study tools for the original Hebrew and Greek, commentaries and reference dictionaries.

For some years, Zondervan packaged Accordance in their Zondervan Bible Study suites for Macintosh.

Accordance for iOS was released on December 30, 2010 for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

Even when it was a product developed exclusively for the Mac OS, Accordance also ran on PCs using the Basilisk II emulator. A Windows-native version was released in 2013.

Accordance for Android was released in February 2018. As of June 2019, the current version 1.4 supports all purchased modules except Parallels, Atlas and Timeline. User Notes are also not yet supported.

Modules available
The program is centered on the Biblical text, but has many additional texts. There are many optional modules, detailed study tools for the original Hebrew and Greek, commentaries and reference dictionaries.

Some modules available include:
*Jewish writings including Mishnah, Targums, Pseudepigrapha, Josephus
*Early Christian writings such as the Didache
* Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia with the Groves-Wheeler Westminster Hebrew Morphology
*Bible Lands Photo Guide

Although the product has many modules, purchasing is simplified by packaging these into standard collections.

Discounts
Discounts are available to students, educators, current & retired ministers, missionaries, homeschoolers and CATUG members. These are not cumulative, i.e. only one discount can be claimed at a time.

MacKeeper is a commercial app which covers a wide range of utility functions in a single package. It is widely advertised, and many readers will have seen its pop-up ads.

Its functions include anti-virus, cleaning up your Mac, backing up, encrypting data, and anti-theft features.

Some users say that it is difficult to remove the program once installed.

Its original developer Zeobit, and the current owner Kromtech, have been widely criticised for aggressive and deceptive advertising.

In 2015 Zeobit was subject to a class action suit over the product (see MacWorld reports ). Recent favourable or less disparaging reviews by independent bloggers disclose that they agreed discount deals with Kromtech (e.g. ).

CATUG members who have tried MacKeeper mostly do not recommend it, finding its frequent reminders intrusive. In 2016, one reported that the Apple GeniusBar eventually traced a slow-running MacBook to the product. However, two others had found it helpful, for freeing memory and removing duplicate files.
If you have an iPhone, you'll want to know how to make an iPhone battery hold its charge for longer

The biggest drain is screen brightness, so don't leave it brighter than you need.

David Pogue, New York Times tech columnist, passed on the following hints from an Apple store Genius.

;1. "Push" email
Your phone may be checking your email accounts on a frequent schedule. Switch off this "Push" feature; set it to Manually instead (in Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars->Fetch New Data). After this, the phone will only check your email when you run the mail app.

;2. GPS checks
Look at Settings ->General->Restrictions->Location. This shows which apps on your phone are working out your location using GPS and triangulation. If you don't need any of them to do that, turn them off.

;3. Notifications

Next, try Settings -> Notifications to see which apps are allowed to display pop-up notifications. These use power to monitor what else is going on. If you don't need them either, turn them off too.

;4. Background apps
Yes, we all thought background apps are meant to be suspended to save power, but this Genius turned them off anyway. Double-press the Home button to open the multitasking app switcher. Hold your finger down on any icon until they all start wiggling. Tap the little [x] close boxes to manually quit open apps.

Result: the day after making the above changes, an iPhone 3GS battery was still at 80% by 5 p.m., compared with 5% the day before before.

N Reid: /* Some alternatives */ Back To My Mac

With Snow Leopard, Screen Sharing works better than it did with Leopard. There is a weird and startling bug that allows the remote user to move your mouse around your screen if you enter Exposé.

It will no longer be supported under macOS 10.14 Mojave. See this 2018 column in TidBITS.

Also, if you have one of the smaller iPads, the smaller app window may only give you the iPhone version of the app, rather than the full iPad functionality.

Accordance is Bible Study software for Macintosh developed by OakTree Software. Many CATUG members consider it the best Bible software available, whether for private use or academic study.

Although Accordance was initially developed for the Mac OS and iOS, it now also runs on Windows.

A version of Accordance 5.0 rewritten to run natively under Mac OS X was released at the start of 2002.
The company has continued to add and improve features, such as the native Quartz rendering system. Version 8 was released in May 2008 and introduced a universal binary for Intel-based Macs. The latest version 10 was released in August 2012.

Although the product has many modules, purchasing is simplified by packaging these into standard collections.

Discounts
Discounts are available to students, educators, current & retired ministers, missionaries, homeschoolers and CATUG members. These are not cumulative, i.e. only one discount can be claimed at a time.

N Reid: /* Repair services */ fix-iphones.com is dead

This page summarises hints shared on the Mac-Ministry List for when you need to repair a Mac, iPod, iPhone, iPad etc.

Jim Warholic's website covers all the iMac models in detail.

*uBreakiFix.com
*PowerBookMedic.com

Credits
*Ed Erickson, Sam Powell, David Burke, David Larson and Chris Howard recommended the above in 2010–2012.
*Jon Glass gave the iPhone glass repair hint in 2017.
